Jenica Atwin, the Liberal MP for Fredericton, New Brunswick, will not be a candidate in this year’s federal election.
After careful deliberation, Jenica decided it was in her family’s best interest for her to step away from federal politics for the time being
declared its director of parliamentary affairs in an email, Katherine McAllister. She will not be a candidate for re-election.
Jenica Atwin entered the House of Commons in 2019. Then a candidate for the Green Party of Canada, she delighted the riding of Fredericton to the outgoing Liberal MP Matt DeCourcey.
It was the first time that the Greens had a candidate elected in a province other than British Columbia, and she is to date the only one to have been elected east of Ontario.
In June 2021, she announced that she was leaving the Green Party to join the Liberal Party of Canada. The MP then cited disagreements regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Three months later, in the federal election, Jenica Atwin was re-elected, this time under the Liberal banner. After defeating the conservative candidate Andrea Johnson with a lead of 3.3% votes in 2019, Jenica Atwin beat this same opponent by only 502 votes in September 2021.
Last December, Jenica Atwin was one of many people within the Liberal team to call for the departure of Justin Trudeau, following the resignation of Chrystia Freeland.
Before entering federal politics at the age of 32, Jenica Atwin worked as a cultural transition coordinator at the high school of Fredericton, and as an education consultant for the organization First Nations Education Initiative.
