Oliver Turvey joins Williams as test and simulator driver for the 2025 season.

Veteran British driver Oliver Turvey has joined Williams Racing as a test and simulator driver, leaving McLaren after more than a decade of behind-the-scenes contributions. The 37-year-old, whose career never materialized as a full-time racing driver, remains one of the most respected development drivers in the paddock. His new role at Williams will see him support racing drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz while contributing to the team's ambitious simulator program.

An Illustrious Career Behind the Scenes

Turvey's tenure at McLaren has spanned several regulatory eras, management changes and partnerships with different engine suppliers. During this time, he became a crucial figure in McLaren's simulator and test programs, helping the team navigate complex technical developments.

Career highlights include an LMP2 victory at the 24 Hours of with Jota and stints in Formula E, where he raced for NIO in often uncompetitive machinery. Despite limited opportunities to shine on the track, Turvey earned a reputation as a meticulous and intelligent driver, valued for his feedback and technical expertise.

A Natural Fit for Williams

In a rare public announcement regarding the hiring of a test driver, Williams hailed Turvey's arrival as a significant addition to the team. The Briton's experience will be key as Williams rolls out its new driver-in-the-loop simulator in late 2025, a cornerstone of its efforts to regain competitiveness in Formula 1.

“I have long admired Williams, and seeing Damon Hill win the world championship for them inspired me as I began my racing career,” Turvey said. “The ambition and determination that drives this project is incredibly inspiring, and I’m excited about the challenge ahead of me to help bring the team back to the top.”

Williams sporting director Sven Smeets added: “Oliver brings a wealth of experience and expertise which will be invaluable to our progression as we continue to strengthen the team in all areas.”

Support Albon and Sainz

Turvey’s role will include providing critical development feedback alongside established Williams simulator driver Harrison Scott. Scott, 28, is another technically proficient driver with a history of success in Formula Ford and Euroformula Open, but he has been out of the competitive spotlight for several years.

The duo will play a crucial role in helping Albon and Sainz as the team looks to close the gap to the middle of the pack and beyond in 2025.

Double Commitments with DS Penske

In addition to his work with Williams, Turvey will continue to serve as a reserve driver for the DS Penske team in Formula E. His extensive experience in simulation and development will undoubtedly benefit both programs.

Williams' Ambitious Vision

Turvey's hiring underscores Williams' commitment to revitalizing its operations through technical improvements and experienced staff. With a strong driver line-up of Albon and Sainz, bolstered by the expertise of Turvey, the team appears determined to climb the F1 ladder and reclaim its legendary heritage.
