Louise Imbeault officially became the 33rd Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick during a swearing-in ceremony in Fredericton on Wednesday afternoon.
Louise Imbeault has more than four decades of career in the journalistic field. She was director of - Acadie from 1996 to 2011. She is the first woman to have been head of news for the public broadcaster in the Atlantic.
She was also president of the Société nationale de l’Acadie from 2017 to 2021 and chancellor of the Université de Moncton from 2018 to 2025.
I think that the nomination of a francophone Acadian activist was well received, and I also think that I will be able to represent all New Brunswickers and in particular our First Nations brothers and sisters and newcomers.
After her swearing in, Louise Imbeault thanked the four Acadians, only four
and the four women who held this position before her. They inspired girls and women to enter fields once reserved for men
she said.

Louise Imbeault is therefore the fifth woman, and the third in a row, to be named after Margaret McCain (1994-1997), Marilyn Trenholme Counsell (1997-2003), Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau (2014-2019) and Brenda Murphy (since 2019).
Before her, Hédard Robichaud (1971-1981), Gilbert Finn (1987-1994), Herménégilde Chiasson (2003-2009) and Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau were the other Acadians to have inherited the role.
The priorities during his mandate will be to forcefully defend the recognition of the Acadian people, on the importance of bilingualism and official languages, on gender equality, the integration of art in all aspects of society and our relationship with the First Nations.
I will work to bring together different cultural communities, promote social justice and respect our treaty obligations, while working to eliminate systemic inequalities.
An important role in 2025
