The story of The Housekeeper begins with the meeting with Millie, a young woman who has just come out of prison. Unemployed, and while she is forced to live in her car, she wishes to rebuild her life and is thus hired as a cleaning lady for the Winchesters. At first glance, this New York family embodies the American dream: they are beautiful, have a little daughter named Cecelia, and live in an incredible and sublime home.

Only here, after his interview with the mistress of the house, Millie feels an increasing unease. This intensifies when she discovers the place in which she will have to sleep: a very small bedroom located in the attic, which only closes from the outside. The foundations of the plot laid, the latter is revealed gradually through the revelations and the pages.

Why does Millie feel so bad at the Winchesters?

Thus, Nina appears more oppressive and authoritarian with her employee, having a series of crises suggesting that she suffers from a serious psychological problem and that she risks causing harm to Millie. The cleaning lady's fear then increases, and she is also unable to communicate with the Italian gardener, Enzowho nevertheless tries to warn him of danger. Faced with the situation, Andrew, the husband, is calming and Millie falls into his arms.

He then throws his wife out, and the housekeeper thinks she has achieved her dream by removing what she thought was a threat and becoming Mrs. Winchester herself. But Millie's world comes crashing down when, as she goes to her room to move her things, Andrew locks him in from the outside. We understand that he is the real danger in the house, and that he subjected Nina to abuse by locking her in the attic.

We then discover that Nina had planned everything from the start with the aim of leaving her husband! One day, she comes across the profile of Millie who went to prison after killing a man, and says to herself that she has to hire her because this woman at her lowest will never refuse to stay with them, and that she could well fall under Andrew's spell. Motivated by the idea that Milla is not a good person, since she killed someone, Nina prefers that misfortune befall her rather than herself.

Millie's final act

Back in the Winchester house: after backing down from Andrew's challenge to lie down and put three pounds on her stomach, Millie realizes it. The man then opens the door for him, and the young woman jumps on him, locks him in the attic and… asks him to pull out his teeth! At the same time, Enzo joins Nina, whom he has been in love with since the beginning, and asks her to return to the house to save Millie. Consumed by remorse, Nina returns home and discovers Andrew's body. She confesses everything to Millie and tells her to leave and save herself, that she will take all the responsibility for this crime in her place.

Millie follows this advice and immediately leaves the house, before Nina calls the police and explains that she does not understand what happened. Faced with the doubts of the inspectors, Nina is on the verge of breaking down and confides that her husband is not at all who we think. At these words, one of the members of the police puts his hand on his shoulder and tells him that Andrew had a relationship with his daughter, and that she has been traumatized ever since. He therefore decides to exonerate Nina to take revenge. The latter inherits all the money from her late husband, and sends some to Millie.

This is just the beginning…

In the last pages, we find Millie who is once again a housekeeper. She has a new interview during which the person who wishes to employ her makes her understand that her profile was selected because she is an expert in getting rid of dirt, all while showing him the bruises on his arm. We understand that this woman wants to get rid of her husband, and that she is going to hire Nina to take care of him.
