Water security: Baraka details Morocco’s vision at the MENA Forum

Present at MENA Forum on Financing Water Development, Nizar BarakaMinister of Equipment and Water, presented the strategies of Morocco to ensure the sustainability of water supplyfacing the challenges of climate change.

The Moroccan government is implementing a water policy focused on four pillars :
Development of traditional resources (dams, rainwater collection, water transfer).
Mobilization of unconventional resourceswith an objective of 1.7 billion m³ of desalinated water by 2030.
Optimization of consumptionvia better management of networks and groundwater management contracts.
Awareness and innovationto encourage more responsible use and develop suitable technologies.

The National Water Supply Plan (2020-2027) mobilise 14 billion dollarswhile investment needs for climate adaptation exceed 40 billion dollars.

Morocco is exploring innovative financing mechanismscombining public budget, private investments and green bondsin order to accelerate the implementation of structuring water projects.
