SENEGAL-SANTE / Kaolack: an official announces an orthopedic equipment project worth 2.4 billion CFA francs – Senegalese press agency

Kaolack, Jan 21 (APS) – The State of Senegal has included in its budget an envelope of 2.4 billion CFA francs for the implementation of a project on orthopedic equipment, for the period 2024-2026, announced Monday in Kaolack (center), Mamadou Lamine Faty, director of the promotion and protection of people living with disabilities.

”Since last year, the State of Senegal has included in the national budget, a major project on orthopedic equipment, with a total cost of 2.4 billion CFA francs for the period 2024-2026″, he said.

Mr. Faty added that “at the level of the multi-sectoral regional committees for disability management and accessibility to assistive technologies, the equipment dimension is strongly taken into account”.

Lamine Faty spoke at a meeting of the Regional Development Committee devoted to the orientation of the multisectoral Regional Committee for disability management and accessibility to assistive technologies, in the presence of the deputy governor of Kaolack in charge of development, Mamadou Habib Kamara.

The meeting is part of a joint mission involving the National Orthopedic Device Center (CNAO), the General Directorate of Social Action (DGAS) and the World Health Organization (WHO), for the monitoring of the installation of multi-sectoral regional committees for disability management and accessibility to assistive technologies.

The Kaolack Regional Committee has been installed since August 20, 2024. The CRD meeting was an opportunity to share “important information” on the state of implementation of State projects and technical and technical partners. financial, including that of the equal opportunities card, ”a flagship mechanism for the inclusion of disability”.

”To date, the State of Senegal, under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Social Action, has distributed 98,126 equal opportunities cards and disability certificates, backed by social safety net programs multi-sectoral programs such as family security grants and universal medical coverage (CMU),” noted Mr. Faty.

According to him, this card is linked to other services, such as transport, employment, education, among others.

According to doctor-colonel Seydina Ousmane Bâ, director of the National Center for Orthopedic Devices (CNAO), the main aim of this meeting was to ”revitalize” the multi-sectoral regional committee for disability management and accessibility to orthopedic technologies. Kaolack assistance.

”In 2013, regional committees were set up throughout the national territory, unfortunately, they remained lethargic due to lack of resources, action plans and even monitoring,” noted Dr Bâ, specialist in physical medicine and orthopedic rehabilitation.

As part of the national disability management strategy for the period 2012-2023, with a total cost of 32 billion 811 million 800 thousand CFA, it was noted that Senegal went from 800 thousand people living with a disability to 1 million 210 thousand 736, or a prevalence rate of 7.3%, according to Ndèye Arame Fall, head of the CNAO social service.

The objective sought by the public authorities is to be able to enroll 373,931 beneficiaries of equal opportunities cards, 705,000 by 2029, she informs, adding that 11,525 people have benefited from orthopedic devices.

For his part, the regional director of social action in Kaolack, Saer Seck indicated that in this region, the prevalence rate of people living with a disability is 7.5%, higher than the national average.

This situation is explained by the presence of the Jakarta motorcycle phenomenon with its share of violent accidents, he said.

But the authorities have made efforts within the framework of equal opportunities cards, since 5,870 beneficiaries have been listed in this region, including 4,999 beneficiaries of family security grants and 872 of universal medical coverage.
