Given that domestic heating represents 50% of electricity consumption, it is by reducing it that Quebecers can have a greater impact on their electricity consumption, and therefore at the same time, on their bill.
“It is really at the heating level that residential customers can achieve the greatest savings,” explains Hydro-Québec spokesperson Cendrix Bouchard.
Water heating constitutes 20% of a residence’s electricity consumption.
All ways to limit your consumption of hot water are good, in particular washing in cold water, shortening your shower, but also favoring a shower over a bath.
-“As we use water, the device will add more and heat it,” says Mr. Bouchard, who also recommends waiting until after the peak period to carry out certain household activities.
Among other small actions to adopt, it is recommended to open your curtains during the day to let the sun in and to close them in the evening to help maintain the heat inside.
The largest peak in electricity consumption is expected for Wednesday morning.
Hydro-Québec anticipates consumption of 41,000 megawatts (MW), which would be lower than the absolute record of 43,124 MW recorded in Quebec on February 3, 2023.
