Will Switzerland have its first quadriplegic federal councilor? Philipp Kutter thinks about it – rts.ch

The Center is looking for personalities to replace Viola Amherd in government. Several favorites withdrew, paving the way for less expected candidates. Philipp Kutter, Zurich national councilor, is considering running. If he were to be elected, he would be the first quadriplegic federal councilor in history.

Unlike Martin Candinas, who gave up by explaining on Monday in the 7:30 p.m. of the RTS that he did not feel called to the function of federal councilor, Philipp Kutter, Zurich national councilor, affirmed that, for his part, he had the sacred fire.

“For 15 years, I have been a trustee of Wädenswil, a small town of 25,000 inhabitants, so I know the work of an executive well. And yes, I can say that I have the sacred fire for this type of task” , he explains Tuesday in the Forum show.

Towards inclusive representation in the Federal Council?

Before getting started, he feels he must evaluate several aspects, notably the needs of his family and the practical challenges linked to his wheelchair. “Federal councilors make a lot of trips, therefore several practical considerations which require reflection,” specifies the Zurich resident.

It would be a great signal if a person in a wheelchair could reach the post of federal councilor

Can a federal councilor be in a wheelchair and fully assume his duties? Philipp Kutter recognizes that this question is at the heart of his concerns. He nevertheless thinks that “it would be a nice signal if a person in a wheelchair could reach such a position.”

Philipp Kutter says he thinks a lot on his own, but also talks to “friends, doctors and people with experience in federal politics to evaluate his candidacy.” He also emphasizes that he receives “a lot of support and messages of encouragement” from those around him and his party colleagues.

A centrist open to urban planning

Philipp Kutter describes himself as a central centrist, emphasizing that he lives in an urban environment in Zurich and is “very open about urban planning issues that are important for cities.”

He also indicates that this is the first time he has seriously considered running for the Federal Council, which explains why he “needs time to think about this decision”. His reflection will end “probably at the last moment”, i.e. at the deadline set by his party, February 3 at 12 p.m.
