The Bagnolet scrap metal market (Seine-Saint-Denis) is reduced to ashes. Of the fifty stands on the plot, nearly forty burned. This Tuesday morning, around 3 a.m., a fire broke out in the market located at 133-135 avenue Gallieni, which includes many furniture sellers and flea markets. 1,000 m2, according to the Paris fire brigade, burned. Without, however, causing any casualties. A large deployment of firefighters and numerous devices (eight lances, five of which were very powerful and one cannon lance) were used to quell the disaster.
Indeed, it was necessary at all costs to avoid the spread to other buildings in this densely urbanized location. “A furniture store that was able to be saved,” confides a witness. A large ladder had to be used to access the blaze. Finally around 6 a.m., the fire was brought under control. But the operation is not over, indicates a BSPP officer. Regular monitoring was put in place to avoid the resumption of residual outbreaks and security was dispatched by the City.
An investigation should be opened to determine the origin of this fire.
This event occurs in a particular context. Indeed, the plot occupied by the scrap dealers is coveted by the City of Bagnolet, its owner. A year ago, the traders were ordered to leave the premises. A vote to this effect took place in the municipal council in December 2023. The PS mayor, Tony du Martino, deplored the nuisance caused by this large flea market. The fairground workers, who began a standoff, had received the support of the deputy for their constituency Alexis Corbière, (ex-LFI) now a member of the environmental and social group (EcoS) in the assembly.
