Lhe years follow one another and are not the same. After the improvement in 2023, 2024 sales of new cars stood at 40,325 vehicles in Gironde. A significant drop of 5%, beyond the decline of 3.4% observed on the national market. According to the principle of communicating vessels, second-hand sales increased by almost 1% in the department, with 160,331 vehicles sold. Incidentally four times more than the new car market.
1 SUVs, always SUVs
The major trend in the auto market remains the enthusiasm generated by SUVs (small or large, it should be noted at a time when the City of Bordeaux is announcing an increase in surface parking for the heaviest models), including the segment takes 51.5% of the Gironde market (19,906 vehicles last year). The hatchback category follows (41.1%, 15,938 units, mostly city models). Station wagons represent only 3.1% of the market, crossovers 2.3%, and sedans (trunk separated from the passenger compartment) a modest 2%.
2 Hybrid ahead of gasoline
A look at buyers' choice of engine. For the first time, the non-rechargeable hybrid takes the lead (27.8%), ahead of gasoline (24.3%). Although it appears far from the record levels posted until the mid-2010s, diesel, contrary to popular belief, is holding up (21.1%, compared to 22.5% in 2023). Clarification: the figures provided by Mobilians Nouvelle-Aquitaine include light utility vehicles, and not just private vehicles. A phenomenon of stagnation also for electric cars, which represent 17.2% of sales (compared to 16.3% in 2023).
3 French podium
City cars from French manufacturers once again share the podium for the best-selling vehicles in Gironde – only the year 2022 saw the Dacia Sandero play spoilsport, taking first place. Restyled in mid-2023, the Renault Clio retains the lead, ahead of the Peugeot 208 and the Citroën C3, or rather the Citroën C3, with the arrival of the new model at the end of last year. At the foot of the podium, the Dacia Sandero is slightly ahead of the Toyota Yaris.
-4 Who loses, who wins
Which manufacturers are doing well in such a sluggish market? Renault and its Romanian pair Dacia fell (respectively -2.6% and -1.7%) but less than others, starting with the Stellantis group, between the clear decline of Peugeot (-8.9%), the fall of Citroën (-18.3%) and DS (-28%) and the small form of Fiat (-5%). There is only Opel to save the furniture (-1.4%). Toyota and Volkswagen, returning from beyond the grave, showed an increase of 19.2% and 15% respectively. And what about German premiums, shaken in recent years, notably by the emergence of Tesla on the market? In order of appearance, BMW stabilizes at +0.6% (but Mini shows a drop of 40.2%), Audi falls by 4%, leaving Mercedes lagging behind (-15.6%). At the party in recent years, Tesla, which had even placed its Model Y at the foot of the Gironde podium for 2023 sales, added to the ambient slump, suffering a drop of 38%.
5 BYD leads the Chinese
Where are the Chinese, whose offensive on the European automobile market is so feared? MG declined significantly (485 vehicles sold, down 60%), while BYD, which inaugurated its Bordeaux dealership in January 2024, took off with 241 sales (+ 91.7%). The other brands have a confidential distribution, like Lynk & Co which falls from 10 to… one unit. Aiways is doing worse, sliding from five sales in 2023 to zero last year.
6 The opportunity is good
And the opportunity in all this? The market remains dynamic (+0.96% compared to 2023) and unsurprisingly dominated by Renault, Peugeot and Citroën. The volumes are incommensurate with those of new vehicles: remember that more cars over 15 years old are sold (44,541 last year, a share in second-hand sales which amounts to 27.8% ) than new cars… And still more: last year, the segment of cars over 15 years old increased by another 0.7%.
