Matam, Jan 20 (APS) – The Matam region recorded 252 maternal deaths per 100,000 births in 2024 while the national average is around 153 deaths, said Monday the Regional Director of Health (DRS), doctor Moustapha Faye.
For demographic health surveys, at the regional level, “we have 252 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, while the national average is 153. The causes are due to hemorrhages, dissociations and infections,” he said. -he said.
Doctor Faye spoke at a meeting of the Regional Development Committee (CRD) on the launch of the Strategic Plan for Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Adolescent and Nutrition Health (PS SRMNIAN-N), in the presence of the deputy prefect of Kanel, Abdou Aziz Mbodj and several health stakeholders.
Moustapha Faye explained that the objective of this strategic plan is to “reduce this number to less than 150 at the regional level”.
He suggested that there are a range of causes that have been identified for maternal deaths, adding that for cases of neonatal morbidity, asphyxia remains the main cause.
-“All of this was presented together to allow stakeholders to clearly address the operational plans that will be implemented. We have set clear strategic objectives for the region in order to reduce maternal, infant and child mortality, but also stunting,” he said.
To achieve these objectives by 2028, several activities will be carried out in the region with the aim of meeting the challenge in terms of maternal, neonatal, child morbidity and family planning, according to him.
