Climate change in : we are there!

The Ecologists party (Europe Ecology Les Verts) expresses its deep concern about the climatic situation in our department where there is drought and heat, linked to a serious deficit of precipitation for several months. And the worst is to come if nothing radically more effective is done. (Photo: www.imazpress.com)

In 1974, more than 50 years ago, René Dumont had already sounded the alarm about the dangers of global warming, future water shortages and environmental degradation.

The realities and data that we observe across our planet prove him right. The year 2024 saw the global average temperature exceed 1.5
degrees, critical threshold announced at COP 21. As a reminder, this threshold was only planned for 2030 and it should not be exceeded.

Climate commitments by countries around the world are putting the planet on a potentially disastrous warming trajectory, reaching 2.9°C by the end of the century, the UN warned on November 20, 2023.

In its report of January 15, Météo Réunion, indicates that “the drought which currently affects Réunion results from a deficit of precipitation which has already lasted for several months” and that it is expected “that very dry periods may follow very rainy episodes, with more marked extremes.

This type of scheme would be unfavorable to the regular recharge of underground and surface water reservoirs, and would put pressure on the use of this water for human activities and the balance of ecosystems. »

Despite this evidence, the question of the global warming emergency and the need to act are only lightly mentioned in the general policy report of January 15, 2025 presented by Prime Minister François Bayrou. However, the financial resources exist.

Two significant indicators: on the one hand, the superprofits generated in a single day by the fossil fuel industry exceed by more than 200 times all the financing committed so far by governments to deal with related losses and damage. climate, on the other hand, just 100 companies are responsible for 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This inertia reinforces the misinformation and disinformation disseminated on the networks, and maintains the denial about global warming which, despite all the scientific reports, is still shared by more than 40% of French people.

Today, France still has the means to intervene, tomorrow this will probably no longer be the case. Like what the population of Mayotte is experiencing, access to water resources could worsen in our territory where a clear warming trend is expected, an extension of dry periods, a water cycle more irregular and a rise in mercury on the coasts and even in the Hauts.

– Europe Ecology Les Verts Réunion asks communities and our parliamentarians to adopt a strategy that meets the challenges. The challenges to be met are major in terms of preserving water resources and adapting our model for agricultural development.

– Europe Ecology Les Verts Réunion calls for concrete and immediate actions in favor of the climate. There is still time to act to avoid the worst, but time is running out…
