The Italian Federica Brignone increased her lead in the general classification of the Alpine Skiing World Cup brilliantly, dominating the super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy) on Sunday.
Brignone, 34, relegated the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and Corinne Suter, respectively to 58 hundredths and 1 s 08/100, while the American Lindsey Vonn fell, without seriousness.
The Italian, already the oldest winner in the World Cup, won her 31st victory, her fourth of the winter, and this in a third discipline after the giant (Sölden and Semmering) and the downhill (Sankt Anton).
The Valdôtaine consolidated her status as the most successful Italian skier in history on the world circuit, the day after the victory of her compatriot Sofia Goggia in downhill, on the same track of theOlimpia delle Tofane which will host the women’s alpine skiing events of the Olympic Games in a year.
Goggia missed her start and was manhandled by the Tofane
. She took 7th place, 1.25 from her compatriot and great rival.
Valérie Grenier had the best Canadian result, with a 15th place, while British-Columbian Cassidy Gray did not finish the event.
For Grenier, who suffered a heavy fall last year during the same event in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the competition brought back very bad memories.
I was obviously thinking a little about what happened last year. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel. There are a few girls who went off the course at this location again today [dimanche]. It didn’t seem particularly dangerous, but it was stressful all the same. Once past this sector, there are two turns left before the end. It was a relief to cross the finish
she shared.
Regarding her descent and its result, Grenier said she was relatively satisfied, since she had not been able to conclude a super-G descent since January 12, 2024, in Altenmarkt im Pongau, Austria.
-I’m still happy with my day! It’s a great way to get a first result in super-G since my injury. I’m happy with my skiing, I was a little slower at the top, but I don’t know exactly why. Overall, it’s a very good day.

Only 20th in the descent the day before, Vonn, back on the circuit with a knee replaced by a titanium prosthesis, was in the mix this time. She could have aimed for her first podium since March 2018, but she made a mistake and fell, before quickly getting back up.
Her highly anticipated reunion with Cortina, where she won twelve times, did not keep their promises. She now has an appointment in Germany, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, next weekend, for a downhill and a super-G.
In the general classification of the World Cup, Brignone now has more than 100 points ahead of the Swiss Camille Rast, who is not participating in the speed events.
The two skiers will meet on Tuesday at Kronplatz, still in Italy, for a giant slalom.
