Too much is too much! Risky operations, ax throwing… Why the series with Chad Michael Murray has a big air of déjà vu!

No, we are not weather vanes, telling you white one day and black the next. We maintain here what we said a few days ago: Return to Sullivan’s Crossingthe romantic series with Chad Michael Murray to watch on TF1 is pleasant to watch, especially when you like fiction like Virgin River. But that’s precisely the problem! The more we advance in viewing this Canadian series with the former star of Scott Brothers and the more it presents disturbing similarities with the Netflix program, season 6 of which was released in December. This is normal, you will tell us, since the two series are adapted from novels by the same author, Robyn Carr. Certainly, but from there to copying and pasting, it’s a little too big to go unnoticed!

Mel and Maggie, two somewhat similar heroines

In broad terms, the plot and the heroine are very similar. Just like Mel in Virgin River, Maggie in Return to Sullivan’s Crossing flees his past by landing in a small idyllic town. Like her, she works in medicine and likes jogging in nature. Just like Mel, Maggie will find herself using her talents as a doctor to save all the inhabitants of the region, where the tragedies seem to multiply, a bit like in Virgin River (fall from a cliff, storm, kidnapping…) Old and grumpy male character… check! Deceased spouse… check! The author Robyn Carr (or the screenwriters who adapt her works) don’t seem to bother too much to imagine the incredible stories happening to her characters.

Return to Sullivan’s Crossing : this extremely risky surgical operation that we had already seen in Virgin River

But if we could pretty much get past all that, the straw that breaks the camel’s back comes towards the end of season 1 of Return to Sullivan’s Crossingwhen Maggie saves the life of one of the secondary characters by performing a risky operation in the wilderness. To relieve cranial pressure, she drills a hole in his skull, using handsome Cal’s (Chad Michael Murray) drill. Does this remind you of anything? Yes, you saw exactly the same operation (with a little less blood) in season 6 of Virgin River on Netflix, when Doc saved the life of one of his patients in the same way, with his grandson Denny as his assistant. In this case, season 1 of Return to Sullivan’s Crossing having been broadcast in 2023 in Canada and the United States, this scene therefore predates that of Virgin River.

The parallels continue in season 2, notably when Connie (played by Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine in Virgin Riverdefinitely!) goes to a bar where they practice ax throwing! Well, well… This is precisely one of the activities carried out by Mel and her friends for her bachelorette party. Knowing that author Robyn Carr is executive producer of both series, we can’t wait to see what similarities we will discover in season 3 of Return to Sullivan’s Crossing et season 7 of Virgin River !
