The Swiss men’s team validated its ticket for the main round of the 2025 world championship. It secured one of the first three places in Group A by beating Poland 30-28 for its third and final match in the preliminary phase.
The team of coach Andy Schmid, for whom a draw was enough to achieve their minimum objective in this competition, played to scare themselves on Sunday in Herning. After taking a six-length lead in the 34th minute (21-15) thanks to a 5-0 partial, the Swiss selection let its opponent come back to 22-22.
Well helped by some decisive saves from Nikola Portner, the Swiss team was however able to tighten its guard in “money time” to avoid any unpleasant surprises. She thus regained a four-goal lead 2’35 from the end (30-26) to remove any hope of a comeback for the Poles.
