Jamey Jasta reviews Tool's latest album

In a recent interview with This Day In MetalHatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta shared his thoughts on Tool's latest album, Fear Inoculum (2019). Although he recognized the band's talent and production, he admitted to never being able to fully immerse himself in their music.

A respect without musical affinity

Jasta explained that, despite several attempts, he was never able to truly appreciate Tool's music: “Every year, or every two years, I'm like, 'Come on, try getting into Tool.' Someone recommends a song to me, I listen to it, and often end up liking it. But I never feel the need to return to it. Yet I can recognize the genius behind what they do: the acting is incredible, the production is impeccable, and Maynard James Keenan's voice is extraordinary.”

However, he added that the album Fear Inoculum gave him a special impression: “I tried to listen to a song from their latest album, and it sounded like spa music. It looked like I was waiting for a massage at a spa in Sedona. It was atmospheric, soft, ethereal… Really delicate and calming. But I'm a caveman at heart. I just want to listen to stuff like Necrot and their [chanson] Drill the Skull.”

His perspective on music

Despite his reservations about Tool, Jasta insists that musical tastes are subjective and that every artist must accept criticism: “You can put all your blood, sweat and tears into an album, and someone can listen to it once and say, 'No, that sucks.' That's what I did with the last Tool album. But you have to take it and keep faith that your music will find its audience.”

Different priorities

Comparing his musical preferences, Jasta highlighted his attraction to more raw and aggressive sounds: “I like intense, direct stuff. Tool is too sophisticated for me. But I understand that their music speaks to a lot of people. They have their own audience and that’s fine.”
