Having just been appointed Minister of Transport by François Bayrou, Philippe Tabarot is already in the spotlight. He is the target of an investigation for “embezzlement of public funds” and “illegal taking of interests”. “A media buzz”, according to the person concerned.
“It's very unfair.” It was at the microphone of Franceinfo, Saturday January 18, that the Minister of Transport, Philippe Tabarot, defended himself against the accusations against him. In July 2021, an investigation was opened against Senator LR for “embezzlement of public funds” et “illegal taking of interest.” News that comes at an opportune time for the chosen one: “The investigation, of which I do not have all the details and for which I have never been heard, which is a preliminary investigation, apparently began four years ago. There was no element on Monday, since it was on Monday that the media buzz came out on this subject, in relation to this situation.”
The case has been taken up in the media since the information was reported by Le Figaro via a judicial source which confirmed that of the newspaper Le Monde. It was the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life (HATVP) which made a report concerning the positions held between 2018 and 2020 by the minister. Le Monde claims that a search had already taken place at his home and in the premises of the public interest group (GIP) in November 2022.
Philippe Tabarot said to himself “sincerely calm on this subject” on Franceinfo: “I worked in complete transparency, I worked with control from the different authorities, whether it was the control of legality, with supervision of the sums and transparency. Everything was declared to the High Authority for the Transparency of Public Life.”
-Several positions in a short time
The declaration of interests claims that Philippe Tabarot was the director of the tourist and cultural public interest group from April 2018 to July 2020, receiving 82,473 euros net in 2019. Then he received 17,997 euros net between August and November 2020 for the position of group mission manager. Also in 2019, he held the position of communications manager for the town of Le Cannet for the tidy sum of 15,318 euros, or 1,276 euros per month.
At the same time, he received 40,000 euros net per year when he was elected to the regional council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and received around 40,000 euros net per year as vice-president in charge of transport between 2015. and 2021. Philippe Tabarot thus declared 137,872 euros net for the year 2019 alone.
