“On the one hand, it shows good will on their part, but on the other hand, they will find themselves in bad company from a political point of view,” observes Loïc Tassé, political columnist.
While the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, was only passing through Washington from January 15 to 17, other political figures have officially confirmed their presence at the inauguration of future President Donald Trump.
Donald Trump will inaugurate his grand return to the White House on Monday after a weekend of celebrations in his honor. A reception is also planned at his golf club in Stirling, Virginia, followed by a large fireworks display in his honor. A ceremony is planned at Arlington Cemetery on Sunday, before he speaks at a “victory rally.”
Public and political figures from across the globe are expected in Washington during this inauguration ceremony, including Martine Biron, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, also Minister responsible for the Status of Women in Quebec.
-It was the government of Quebec which announced its presence as part of a “mission [qui] is part of a strategic approach to consolidate economic and political relations of interest to Quebec.
“If this presence sends a message, I don’t think it will be sent to Washington! I rather think that it is aimed at Quebec. It’s in a way a way of saying that Quebec is not going to go back,” observes Loïc Tassé.
Strong reactions
This decision sparked a strong reaction from Québec solidaire, while its co-spokesperson, Ruba Gazal, spoke openly in X: “The Minister of the Status of Women, Martine Biron, should boycott the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump , a recognized sexual assaulter.
The Quebec solidaire MP added that such a decision would make it possible to send “a strong message to victims of sexual assault and to all women in Quebec,” while taking care to underline the importance of Quebec being nevertheless represented there.
Quickly, former minister and former Liberal MP Christine St-Pierre responded in the Canadian Embassy is keen[dra] a large gathering” and that it will be an “opportunity to meet influential people”.
Federal Ministers François-Philippe Champagne and Mary Ng will represent Canada during this ceremony.
