There have been numerous calls lately to the Bird Protection League in Vendée. Indeed, many residents find dead pigeons in quite mysterious ways. This is simply explained by a disease called trichomoniasis.
A parasite
This disease, which is a parasite, affects the respiratory and digestive tracts of birds. “It prevents them from feeding,” explains the LPO Vendée to the Courier Vendéen. The disease affects greenfinches, finches, pigeons, doves and sometimes certain birds of prey.
The disease is transmitted by water and droppings. Affected birds are usually listless, disheveled and in some cases with food remnants on their beaks.
No risk for other animals
This disease is without risk of transmission for humans and mammals.
-However, you must take some precautions if you come across a sick or deceased bird. “As always when you come face to face with a wild animal, you must wear gloves before touching it. You must then wash your hands properly using soap,” explains the LPO.
Clean the feeders
To avoid transmission to other birds, the LPO advises cleaning bird feeders regularly. This spread could be worrying, particularly for certain species. “We notice a decline in the greenfin population for example in recent years,” explains the Vendée LPO.
Trichomonosis does not only extend to Vendée since Brittany and Charente-Maritime are also affected.
