“Everything converges towards the Du Bellay hypothesis”: the mystery of the coffin of Notre-Dame

2025, year of Du Bellay? Lovers of sonnets will remember that in 2022 we celebrated the 500th anniversary of the poet's birth, May 1, 1522 being the commonly accepted date. Over the centuries, however, several sources have claimed that he would have rather come into the world in 1525, or in 1524 like Ronsard, of whom his illustrious friend wrote that he was the older of the two. One of the many vaguenesses on the life of the author of “Regrets”, like so many obstacles encountered by the archaeologist and doctor Éric Crubézy during the abundant investigation which he devoted to him in recent years and which he shares in a book, to be published on Wednesday January 22: “Le Cavalier de Notre-Dame” (Ed. Odile Jacob).

Notre-Dame, because it was at the dawn of the reopening of Cathedral that a major discovery was announced four months ago, although itself tinged with uncertainty: the remains of Joachim would have been found du Bellay under the slabs of the transept crossing. After the fire which destroyed the monument in 2019, excavations were entrusted to the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) in order to protect possible remains of the work, in particular the scaffolding necessary for the reconstruction of the arrow. Around a hundred graves emerged from the ground, including two lead coffins.
