Agathe Guillemot, Solène Gicquel, Léna Kandissounon. The list of Breton internationals in athletics was plethoric in 2024, with even six qualified for the Paris Olympic Games. However, none of them will be lined up this weekend for the Brittany championships. The fault, in particular, of a course organized by the French Athletics Federation at the moment, in Portugal. “But generally, they don’t come much,” recalls Clément Bajon, general director of the Brittany Athletics League.
Some come to test themselves, or to start their seasons. To win a Brittany champion jersey. But the goal of the regional championships is not there. “We want our second knives, who are very good regional players, to be in the best possible conditions to try to qualify for the French championships,” insists Clément Bajon, who points out that the majority of medalists among young people at the national level will be good part.
Common races for juniors, hopefuls and seniors
In all categories, the goal is to “find confrontation in this first stage of the indoor season”. This involves, for example, an enticing field in the long jump, where Titouan Bizet, French Elite vice-champion in 2024, will find his best enemy, Segui-Alan Jaouen, with whom he has been pushing for the Brittany record for a year. But also by pooling races between juniors, hopefuls and seniors, which raises the general level of the competition. “The idea is that the best juniors don't just stay among themselves, that they compete at higher levels and that pushes them to perform better,” assures Clément Bajon.
-The 2024 Brittany indoor championships allowed 502 personal records to be broken over the two days of competition. Some Brittany records had fallen. And even a French record, signed by Chloé Le Roch in the 3,000m walk. There is no doubt that the prospect of a regional jersey gives wings to many of these athletes.
