The South African government has taken the F1 Grand Prix project in the country to a new milestone, thanks to the confirmation of this project. This Friday, the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture proposed several potential locations via its Formula 1 Bid Steering Committee.
South Africa wants a GP by 2026 or 2027 and hopes for a long-term contract: “A corresponding promoter and/or location and host city will be chosen for application to the FIA and Formula 1”we can read on the declaration.
With its circuit already present and a Grade 1 possible in the near future, Kyalami is obviously the favorite. However, Cape Town could also offer itself as a possible destination for the Grand Prix, especially since the ministry document requires that the track be less than 30 minutes from a major city.
“The environment should contribute to the look and feel of a premier international event and/or provide an iconic backdrop” continues the specifications. “The track must offer an exciting spectacle and allow wheel-to-wheel battles by offering numerous chances for overtaking.”
Gayton McKenzie, the country's sports minister, explained why he is making Kyalami the pet project: “The race will be at Kyalami. Kyalami is doing the right thing. Toby Venter and Willie Venter, the circuit bosses, are doing a great job to bring Kyalami up to F1 standards.”
-“They've invested money, it's there. They've met with Apex, who are looking after the track to bring it up to F1 standards. We're making sure that we're going to host the championship, and I think we let's look at 2027. We were there, it's going to happen here.”
The committee gave cities until January 31 to express their interest. From there, he declared that he would make his decision within the following five days, which would therefore make it possible to know before February 5 which city will be a candidate for F1.
