During the last municipal council of Salins-les-Bains, the project to install a pellet factory by the company EO2 was again at the center of debates.
Despite criticism from part of the opposition and the concerns of certain residents, elected officials ultimately gave a favorable opinion. The final decision, however, rests with the prefect.
For the mayor, Michel Cètre, the investment of 25 million euros committed by the company EO2 represents concrete proof of its desire to create jobs in the region. This point carried weight in the council's decision, although other concerns were raised, including noise pollution, increased heavy goods vehicle traffic and the impact on local quality of life.
What is the balance between industrial development and the preservation of the living environment?
The public consultation on this project, which took place from November 20 to December 13, allowed citizens of Salins-les-Bains and neighboring municipalities – Bracon, Marnoz, Pretin and Saint-Thiébaud – to express themselves. This exchange, organized as part of the registration of an Installation Classified for Environmental Protection (ICPE), gathered various opinions, both favorable and critical.
Feedback from the public, as well as the opinions of municipal councilors from the various municipalities concerned, will be analyzed by the prefecture as part of the final decision-making. Although the project would make it possible to meet a growing demand for renewable energy and bring local economic dynamism, it continues to divide.
-Elected officials stressed the need to ensure a balance between industrial development and preservation of the living environment. For the moment, the favorable opinion of the municipal council marks an important step, but far from closing the debate.
