The Riou school in Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger under surveillance

The board of directors of the Kamouraska – Rivière-du-Loup School Service Center has made the decision to keep the Riou school in Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger open. It will therefore be under surveillance in the future. Students from the municipality and Saint-Épiphane will therefore attend their respective schools.

The decision was made following a consultation carried out with the populations of Saint-Épiphane and Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger in the fall of 2024. “The results of the survey are in favor of children attend the school in their respective village throughout their journey,” shared Geneviève Soucy, deputy general director at CSS, by email.

Currently, students from the two municipalities in preschool, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade go to the Notre-Dame-du-Sourire school in Saint-Épiphane, while those in 4th, 5th and 6th attend the Riou school in Saint-Épiphane. François-Xavier-de-Viger.

The registration criteria will therefore be modified for the 2025-2026 school year. The period to register will be from February 1 to 21, 2025.

For the current school year, the CSS has 17 students from Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger and 73 from Saint-Épiphane. For a school to remain open and funding to be granted, the service center must form at least two groups of six students.

“In accordance with our policy, when there are 20 students or less, the school is under surveillance,” underlined the deputy director general. Thus, according to registrations, the CSS could reconsider the future of the school in the coming months or years.
