In recent years, the opposition between Quebec nationalism and Canadian federalism has been embodied in the duel between François Legault and Justin Trudeau.
The first represented a visceral nationalism, autonomist, but stubborn in a refusal of independence, which paralyzed him.
The second represented multiculturalism in all its ideological extremism, which was however not very intellectually constructed.
Nationalism
Both, although in very different ways, were affectives, even if they did not have the same affects.
However, a new duel is emerging in the Canada–Quebec relationship, and it could well be decisive.
Over the next few years, it will feature Paul St-Pierre Plamondon and Pierre Poilievre. It will be of another nature.
The two leaders are very cerebral, very intelligent.
-PSPP is reminiscent of Jacques Parizeau: his conversion to the independence of Quebec was initially rational. It gradually took on an existential charge. He is the first sovereignist leader in a long time to ask the question of the very survival of the Quebec people.
He also does not allow himself to be intimidated by the woke left, just as Parizeau did not allow himself to be intimidated in his time by the financial bourgeoisie.
Smart
Poilievre, for his part, broke with the complex right of the Conservative Party. It took a lot of courage to do that. He confronts the dominant ideology and proposes a Canada freed from the delusions of Wokism. However, he does not contest the Canadian multiculturalism to which he adheres, even if he does not say it very loudly in Quebec.
Poilievre, a few days ago, called out PSPP on social networks, thus recognizing the credibility of the independence revival and the legitimacy of the leader who carries it.
PSPP responded remarkably, recalling that Quebec should not only leave Justin Trudeau’s Canada, but the Canadian federation itself, and become a country. Their clash will be exciting.
