after Elon Musk's accusations, the government announces a new “audit” on rapist gangs

The British Interior Minister, Yvette Cooper, did not put it this way, but her announcements, Thursday January 16, in the House of Commons sounded like a change of heart from the Starmer government after the recent attacks by Elon Musk. The boss of Tesla and SpaceX has called for a national investigation into the rapist gangs that have operated in dozens of towns in central and northern England since the early 2000s, after discovering, three weeks ago, this scandal has long been chronicled by the British media.

The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, initially rejected his request, explaining that several investigations had already been carried out at the local level, that a national public inquiry would take years and would not serve the interests of the thousands of victims, who above all need actions.

However, Yvette Cooper confirmed Thursday the launch of a “quick audit” at national level on rapist gangs and a budget of £5 million (€5.92 million) to help fund new local investigations. The national inquiry will only last three months: it will probably mainly be a compilation of the various work already carried out on these scandals, because, in the United Kingdom, public inquiries strictly speaking involve the summoning of dozens of victims and stretch over years.
