“The music room with the most beautiful acoustics in the world” – Journal le Ô

A 41-year-old virtuoso pianist, Francesco Piemontesi from Ticino recorded a disc and gave a 100% Schubert concert in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Our interview!

– Your first contact with the piano?
– At home, we had a mini piano with a few notes. I was two or three years old and I was already spending time creating sounds. The passion was there from the start. The piano has always been at the center of my life, so the question of whether I was going to become a pianist one day never came up.

– Why are you recording in La Chaux-de-Fonds?
– The music room has the most beautiful acoustics in the world, both clear and warm. I have known this room since my childhood, thanks to the records. Many legendary records have been recorded here. One day, Frédéric Eggimann, the president of the music society at the time, invited me for a recital. When I played it, I liked the acoustics so much that I recorded my second record there. Currently, I am recording another, on Schubert, a broad overview of which was given during the concert on January 12.

– Why Schubert?
It’s impossible to record a record if you don’t feel like you have something to say with your works. Now Schubert is a composer who is very close to me from a human point of view, with whom I spent the majority of my studies and, in recent years, on stage. It was a good time to record pieces by this composer.

– How would you describe your style?
I try to observe very strictly the text that was written. Because, unfortunately, a lot of the composers I play are dead. Fortunately, I also play contemporary music and so, with a contemporary composer, if I have a question, I can ask him. The text is a message that the composer wants to convey and, for me, the score is a code that must be deciphered. As a physical person, with my body, with my breathing, with my hands, I put my own effort into the interpretation. It will necessarily be different from what another colleague will do.

– Do you like La Chaux-de-Fonds?
– I love nature and snow. The International Watch Museum is impressive. And I like the fact that there are a lot of master watchmakers in the region because the precision work, in depth with a microscope, is sometimes the work I do myself at the piano.

– Your greatest achievement in the world of music?
– Each successful concert is an accomplishment. Of course, there are biographical things that are perhaps more impressive from the outside. For example, my concerts with the Berlin or New York Philharmonic, I will never forget them. Each concert, where we feel a sharing with the public, is special. It’s an accomplishment.

– What is your goal in music?
– Complete sharing between the work and the public! I give my best to each concert and I want the public to come to each concert, those of my colleagues and mine. In quite troubled times, it is essential to have music or other forms of art to take us away from the worries of daily life.
