The United Nations (UN) General Assembly approved, during its 79th session in New York, the UN resolution amending that relating to “the role of mediator and ombudsman institutions in the strengthening and protection of human rights , good governance and the primacy of the law”, thanks to an initiative from the Mediator of the Kingdom and a remarkable effort from the Permanent Representation of Morocco to the UN.
This initiative, which has benefited from great international support, illustrates Morocco’s sustained efforts to promote human rights in international forums, as it testifies to the achievements made by the Kingdom in this area, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, indicates a press release from the Institution of the Mediator of the Kingdom.

It also highlights the effective commitment of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom, in coordination with partners at the International Ombudsman Institute, to give more visibility to ombudsman institutions and their roles in matters of human rights, governance and development, underlines the press release. This UN resolution constitutes an important step forward on the path to strengthening the influence of ombudsman institutions, while supporting their roles in defending the rights of citizens vis-à-vis the administration and in consecrating the principles of good governance, specifies the same source.
-The new features introduced in the said resolution made it possible to develop a new vision of the roles of mediators and ombudsmen, through the fundamental amendments adopted relating to the recognition of the essential efforts made by these institutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular Goal 16, through the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for all, the establishment of accessible and free complaints mechanisms, the identification of structural problems, and the strengthening of efficiency, accountability and inclusiveness in public administration at all levels.

These new developments go hand in hand with the roles and prerogatives of mediators and ombudsmen in the light of developments in the world, while preserving the achievements made, particularly in terms of protection and promotion of mediator institutions, by guaranteeing their independence and by supporting the requirements of their autonomous management. It is also about encouraging them to seek accreditation from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, the press release concludes.
