A truck from Sebta fails to enter Morocco

A truck that attempted to cross the Sebta border post to enter the‘other side in Morocco nfailed to make the crossing for administrative reasons. This attempt comes within the framework ofefforts to reopen commercial customs between Sebta and Melilla with Morocco.

The truck’s failed attempt took place at the Tarajal crossing point. The truck was carrying goods such as hygiene products, ear swabs and paper.

According to the Iberian press, the truck was able to enter Moroccan territory because of problems relating to the « documentation »the vehicle was unable to unload its goods destined for Fnideq in Morocco.

Citing police sources, the Spanish news agency Europa Presse reported that Moroccan customs authorities prevented the entry of a Sebta company called “Vivera Atlántico-Mediterráneo”.

This happened around 1:30 p.m. indicates the same source, which stressed that the crossing would have taken 2 hours to go from the town of Sebta to Fnideq. Note that this is the second attempt in eight days for the same city. A new attempt should take place on Friday.

These tests come as information on the reopening of commercial customs between Morocco and the two occupied Spanish enclaves has emerged in recent days without official confirmation from the competent authorities of the two countries.

Spain and Morocco had agreed to work together to reopen commercial customs with the two enclaves in the bilateral roadmap signed in Rabat in April 2022 during the visit of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez.

It should be remembered that the town of Sebta has never had commercial customs and this will be a first, while this regime existed for Melilla, but the border post was closed by Morocco in 2018 .

The two countries had agreed to change several measures and details regarding the transit of goods between the two border crossing points, putting an end to certain criticized practices, such as those of mule women, and to make the flow of goods more equitable.

While the opening of customs in Sebta has not yet been officially recorded, the government delegation in Melilla confirmed their reopening on Wednesday after a truck carrying electrical appliances crossed the Beni Ensar border late in the evening .

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, confirmed the information to the press, declaring that customs in Melilla had recorded the passage of goods destined for Morocco in what he described as “first step » of the first phase of complete customs standardization.
