Renault smiles in 2024, a dark year for Stellantis

In the automobile market, it's time to take stock of the year 2024. As for the French giants, Renault is having a very good year. For its part, Stellantis is seriously suffering the blow.

Renault is doing well in 2024

The automobile market in 2024 proved to be mixed for the two French giants, Renault and Stellantis. For its part, Renault posted encouraging figures, while Stellantis had to deal with a year marked by significant declines. Thus, the diamond mark stands out in a generally gloomy market, recording an increase of 1.3% in its global registrations. These reach a total of 2,264,815 vehicles sold. This result is part of positive continuity, consolidating the 9% growth recorded in 2023. This resilience comes mainly from Europe, where the group's registrations are increasing by 3.5%, an increase twice as fast as that of the rest of the sector.

One of the keys to Renault's success lies in its customer focus. Sales to individuals, which are more lucrative, represent 63% of its registrations in Europe, compared to a market average of only 42%. Models like the Mégane and Sandero, which offer higher margins, account for 30% of overall sales.

The group's brands are also following this upward trajectory. Renault grew by 1.8%, Dacia posted an increase of 2.7%, notably thanks to the Sandero, candidate for the title of best-selling car in Europe. Alpine, the sports brand, recorded a notable increase of 5.9% despite limited volumes.

Stellantis: A mixed year

For Stellantis, the 2024 results are significantly less favorable. The group saw its global deliveries fall by 12%, to 5.4 million units. This decline is largely attributable to a 25% collapse in volumes in North America, a key market for the manufacturer. Excess stocks force Stellantis to slow down production to sell off unsold vehicles before the arrival of new models planned for 2025.

In Europe, the picture is not much brighter with an 8% decrease in sales, although South America offers a clearing thanks to an increase of 4%, driven by Fiat. Despite these difficulties, Stellantis wants to remain ambitious, banking on the initial success of new models such as the Peugeot 3008, which has already recorded 100,000 orders, and the Citroën C3, with 90,000 units ordered.
