Your Christmas tree loses its thorns in a corner of the living room? It's time to get rid of it. Many municipalities offer collection points to avoid the litter but also give a second life to plants. L’Seine-Eure conurbation which manages selective sorting, indicates where to get rid of your Christmas tree and how conifers are recycled.
Transformed into shredded material for the garden
Fir trees can be crushed by users and reused as mulch in the garden. It will protect the plants from the cold in winter and keep the soil moist and cool in summer.
Deposited in recycling center
Deposited in one of the eight recycling centers in the area (Alizay, Clef-Vallée-d'Eure, La Haye-Malherbe, Le Val d'Hazey, Louviers, Pont-de-l'Arche, Val-de-Reuil and Vironvay), the fir trees will be crushed then composted or used in mulching. It will thus supply the annual free distribution of mulch and compost offered by the Agglo in the fall.
Some town halls also offer to recover them to transform them into shredded material but these are initiatives specific to the municipalities.
Stored with plant waste
Another solution: wait for the return of the collection of plant waste door to door. Set up by the Seine-Eure Agglomeration, the collection of green waste will resume mi-mars (week 14 of the year). In the meantime, the fir trees can be cut up and put into pieces in the plant waste bin. They will then be taken care of and sent to the composting platforms to which all green waste in the area passes. They will then be transformed into natural fertilizer, compost or shredded material.
-Given to animals
Christmas trees can also be offered to farms surrounding areas. Some accept them to be given to goats who love them: the thorns and bark bring them vitamins and trace elementsa great addition to their daily diet.
No plastic trees!
Please note, the Agglomeration specifies that “for all these methods of recovery, only natural fir trees can be taken into account”. Fir trees with artificial snow or white moss must under no circumstances be fed to animals or placed with plant waste, composted or crushed, because very toxic !
And of course, the trees must be stripped of all ornament : decorations (balls, garlands, etc.), packaging, feet, logs or pots.
Artificial trees with snow or white moss can be placed in a recycling center and will be treated separately.
Illegal deposits prohibited
If collections and collections of fir trees are set up, it is obviously to avoid litter. The Seine-Eure Agglomeration reminds that “placed in the street, fir trees will not be collected with household waste, sorting or bulky items” and “abandoning your fir tree is considered illegal dumping of waste on the public highway, even near the bins and columns. It is an offense punishable by a fine of at least €35 and which can go up to €450 or €1,500.”
