Ten days after the Caen Memorial, and two days after the Beauregard festival, the Calvados department announced this Thursday, January 16 that it was suspending its presence on the social network X.
-“Jean-Léonce Dupont (the UDI president of the Departmental Council) has taken the decision to suspend the account of the Department of Calvados on the social network X (formerly Twitter) as of January 31, 2025indicates the press release. This decision is based on in-depth reflections linked to current issues of digital communication and respect for online exchanges.
In this press release, the Normandy Department denounces the abuses of this social network currently owned by billionaire Elon Musk, close to Donald Trump. X y is criticized by his “ddiffusion of unreliable information, debates guided by algorithms, with “the highlighting of polemical, sensationalist and populist content,” as well as “the climate of growing disrespect on the platform where insults, harassment and hate speech are multiplying.”
The Department will now join the Bluesky network, which is very similar in principle to X. Bluesky was designed by Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, to offer an alternative to Twitter and became independent in 2022. This network has been accessible to all since February 2023. It has 24 million subscribers as of Thursday January 16, 2025.
Calvados joins Landes, Loire-Atlantique, Ille-et-Villaine and Haute-Vienne, other French departments which have already left X.
