We are 4 days away from the official installation of Republican Donald Trump. But we already know Trump's America: It will be divisive, violent – symbolically and physically – it will be the America of the rich and powerful first. Nothing very appealing about all this, except for those on the right side of the fence. We can already see Trump's America in the eyes of those who are fleeing the country, terrified; we see her in the allegiance of Meta's powerful boss; we see it in the abolition of the Agency to Combat Disinformation. We also see it abroad, in the agitation caused by expansionist designs on the Panama Canal, Greenland and Canada; we see it in the terror that hovers in Europe in the face of the scarecrow Trump; we see it in the rapid developments between Israel and Hamas, etc. Trump is all that and a lot more. President Joe Biden leaves the White House bitter and with a terribly disturbing speech.
It was to be a farewell speech to the nation, at 82 years old, after having done what he could to revive his country, which like the entire planet suffered two wars, in Ukraine and the Middle East. In the end it will be an alarmist speech. Installed in the Oval Office, which he will leave for good next Monday, the Democrat said this: “Today, an oligarchy of extreme wealth, power, and influence is taking shape in America, literally threatening our entire democracy, our fundamental rights and freedoms, and everyone's opportunity to advance.“.
Biden pointed “a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few ultra-rich people (…). The consequences are dangerous if their abuse of power is not controlled (…). I am equally concerned about the potential rise of a technical-industrial complex which could also represent a real danger for our country“, declared the American president.
Biden still wanted to take care of his exit by insisting on a peaceful transfer of power. During his entire brief speech, barely 15 minutes, he had the elegance not to name Trump but everyone understood where the threats were coming from. The Republican loves his fellow citizens so much that the three richest people in the country, and therefore in the world, ostensibly display their unreserved support…
Billionaire Elon Musk was there at the very beginning of the election campaign and spent more than $100 million to get the Republican elected. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos quickly respondedidem for Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg. It is undoubtedly the radical transformation of the latter, through contact with Trump, which is the most striking. Biden has good reason to worry about his legacy.
This legacy includes the ceasefire agreement concluded by Israel and Hamas, after 15 months of fighting and tens of thousands of deaths on the Palestinian side. But we know that even the authorship of this truce will be claimed by Trump. “It will take time to feel the full impact of what we have done together, but the seeds are planted and they will grow and flower for decades“, argued Biden.
As a political testament, the American president proposes that the Tax Code be reformed, that the substantial tax cuts granted to billionaires be eliminated so that they pay “their fair share“. Biden decreed in March 2023 that he was going to drain the wealthiest to absorb part of the abysmal public deficit of the USA, some 31,400 billion dollars, other emergencies in the country and in the world have decided otherwise. According to Federal Reserve data, the richest 0.1% of Americans hold more than 5 times the wealth of the poorest 50%.
Other proposals: put an end to the mountain of money devoured by political campaigns, limit the term of office of members of the Supreme Court to 18 years and prohibit elected representatives of Congress from stock market dealings. Let him tell Trump, he who personally appointed 3 of the 9 judges of the Supreme Court, 6 of whom are Republican. The next president has no interest in shortening the terms of those who saved him from conviction and certainly prison for serious crimes.
Biden is not leaving as he would have liked, he would have liked to end his 50 years of political life differently. He tried until the end to hold on to cross swords with Trump, whom he was certain to beat in the presidential election on November 5, as in 2020. But his health problems, the bad polls and above all the total failure of the televised debate against the Republican sealed his fate…
And that is perhaps what will remain of him: a president who was unable to complete his projects. He leaves, leaving an anguished country and a world that is just as anguished. He leaves leaving behind powerful enemies, especially China despite the last few blows that Washington has dealt. He leaves, leaving Russia's bite in Ukraine, a war he could, should, win.
