The Federal Court gave the green lightThursday, to the authorization of deer shooting in the canton of Geneva. A decision which concerns the canton of Vaud just as much. Indeed, the animal, which tends to reproduce more easily at the end of the lake – where hunting has been prohibited since 1974, unlike its neighbor – knows no borders. He traveled from one canton to another, mainly in the district of Nyon, but also as far as Ain in neighboring France.
“The Canton of Vaud supports the principle of regulating deer in Geneva,” explains Frédéric Hofmann. The head of the hunting, fishing and species section at the State of Vaud adds that this position of the TF “confirms the objective of reducing the deer population in the south of the Jura, decided by the Franco-Swiss Platform.” This reduction objective is also included in the Vaud forest-game concept 2021-2030.
Necessary regulation?
Too high a density of personnel exerts strong pressure on the environment (forest and agricultural crops). The damage can be locally significant. At the end of winter, some rapeseed fields can be 50% or more destroyed. Hence the “necessary regulation”, which allows “healthy cohabitation”. On Vaudois soil, the deer population has been decreasing for two years. Recent counts from the Dôle-Gex-Versoix unit show at least 200 to 250 animals (males, females and young).
The head of the Forest and Nature Service of the canton of Fribourg, Dominique Schaller, is also closely following this decision of the Federal Court which sets jurisprudence, even if his territory is less directly concerned by Geneva’s deer. Intercantonal shooting plans target deer. Each year, the count assesses the population and the cantons define the number of animals to be collected. “There is never an overcharge. The aim is above all to ensure the sustainability of wildlife.” According to the specialist, the reasons for hunting are linked to tradition or ecology and economics.
