Dakar, January 15 (APS) – The President of the Republic called on the members of the government concerned to “finalize” the new maritime and port policy before the end of next March, announces the press release from the Council of Ministers of this Wednesday January 15.
”The Head of State asked the Prime Minister and the Minister responsible for Maritime and Port Infrastructure to finalize, before the end of March 2025, the new maritime and port policy of Senegal taking into account the maritime vocation of our country and of the various projects received, in progress or in perspective,” states the press release from the Council of Ministers.
The same source adds that ”the Head of State stressed the need, in terms of reforms, to update and expand the governance framework of public and private ports in Senegal, to strengthen the National Affairs Agency maritime, in view of the new challenges linked to maritime navigation”.
The new maritime and port policy includes several projects, including the construction of 23 ports intended for artisanal fishing, announced the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, last August.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye asked the government to “step up the modernization of ports and fishing quays”.
Port infrastructure must benefit from “an expanded modernization program,” according to the President of the Republic.
”The implementation of ‘Vision Senegal 2050’ (the country’s national development program) must give special priority to the development of maritime and port infrastructure,” the Minister of Vocational Training wrote in the press release. .
Mr. Faye spoke of “the urgency of revising the partnership between the State and the Senegalese Consortium of Maritime Activities, as well as the need to establish full national sovereignty over the management and development of the Dakar shipyards , with the strategic repositioning of the Naval Repair Infrastructure Company”.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye invited the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime and Port Infrastructure to proceed, with the help of her colleagues from Finance and Budget, Industry and Trade, to an evaluation and a ”reorientation” missions and activities of the Senegalese Shippers Council.
