Water and nuclear technologies at the heart of a workshop in Rabat – Today Morocco

This event is about pan-African water resources monitoring and data sharing using nuclear science and technology, for the benefit of the African region.

Collaboration : 120 experts from several countries are taking part over three days in a meeting organized in Rabat by the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Sciences and Techniques (CNESTEN). Focused on monitoring pan-African water resources and sharing data using nuclear science and technology, for the benefit of the African region, this workshop aims to strengthen pan-African collaboration in the field.

Identify and develop pan-African collaborations to strengthen regional capacities in the assessment and sustainable management of water resources in Africa using nuclear techniques. This is the objective of a workshop organized from January 14 to 16 in Rabat by the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Sciences and Techniques (CNESTEN). This event concerns the monitoring of pan-African water resources and the sharing of data using nuclear science and technology, for the benefit of the African region. It is organized in close collaboration with the American foundation CRDF Global (Civilian Research and Development Foundation) and in partnership with the Department of State of the United States of America, the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero Emissions of the United Kingdom. United, as well as with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“This scientific event is part of the Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses (SDPU), aimed at promoting nuclear science and technology in socio-economic sectors, including water, environment, food and health, while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” report the organizers. In addition, this meeting offers, according to the same source, a framework for the development of regional and international cooperation linked to the water sector.
The program of this workshop includes a series of presentations followed by debates and discussions on the needs, perspectives and challenges linked to water resources in Africa, as well as their management using nuclear and isotopic techniques. More than 120 participants take part.

These experts come from 25 African countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, including high-level government officials, scientists and managers specialized in water resources management, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations involved in the water sector.
As the same source underlines, Cnesten attaches central importance to the development and promotion of nuclear and isotopic techniques in the water sector, in order to contribute to better knowledge for sustainable and responsible management of water resources in Morocco. . “Through this scientific event, Cnesten strengthens its positioning on a regional and international scale in the field of water resources management using nuclear techniques, given its recognition as a Center of Excellence in this theme by the IAEA and the Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement for Africa on Research, Development and Training in the Field of Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA),” concludes the same source.
