Mbour, January 16 (APS) – Accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles have caused at least 22 deaths in the department of Mbour (West), in 2024, APS learned on Wednesday from the adjutant-major, Jean Pierre Ndiaye, deputy commander of the Mbour fire brigade.
”For the year 2024, we have recorded 1,050 outings. (There were) 1,422 victims assisted and 22 deaths involving motorcycle accidents,” said Jean-Pierre Ndiaye during an information meeting on the decentralization of two-wheeler regularization activities.
According to him, ”the Jakarta motorbikes did the most damage”.
“These alarming figures call for our vigilance and our reaction, to stop this massacre,” reacted Ngagne Ba, regional director of infrastructure and land transport in Thiès.
Warrant Officer Jean-Pierre Ndiaye insisted on raising awareness among drivers, on the importance of wearing a helmet, a driving license and insurance.
”The use of helmets is formal and it is a non-negotiable issue,” he clarified.
The regional director of infrastructure and land transport of Thiès announced the start of the moped registration process next Wednesday in Mbour.
As everywhere throughout the world, the Senegalese authorities are deploying all the means at their disposal to fight against this “tragedy”, through policies and strategies, aimed at “limiting accidents in general and those involving two-wheelers, particularly,” said Ngagne Ba.
For Mr. Ba, these “alarming figures” reassure the government in the relevance of its decision to generalize the registration of two-wheelers and to strengthen control, through a circular from the Prime Minister.
The meeting chaired by the prefect of Mbour, Amadou Diop, brought together the various decentralized state services in the department, local elected officials and motorcycle taxi driver associations.
It enabled discussions with local stakeholders on the two-wheeler registration process, with a view to a better understanding of the new measures.
Ngagne Ba promised, in the same vein, to raise the grievances of two-wheeler drivers, which mainly focused on the extension of the duration of the process and the facilitation of the acquisition of the documents required for the registration of their motorcycles .
