In the Matam region, an initiative supported by the Matam Sports association recently allowed nearly a hundred students from school 3 in Ourossogui to discover six sports disciplines. This event, entitled “Sport at school”, is part of the dynamic of development of school sport advocated by the association.
Abdoulaye Aw Guèye, active member of the association, explained that the objective is to familiarize young students with sport from an early age. He said: “Our goal is to develop school sport in the Matam region. This is why today we brought together nearly a hundred students from school 3 in Ourossogui to introduce them to various sporting disciplines. » This initiative is already in its third edition.
The Ourossogui municipal stadium hosted this event where students were introduced to various sports such as football, Basketball, handball, badminton, judo and taekwondo. For this, technicians from Matam and Ourossogui were mobilized. The organization of this activity targeted primary schools in order to instill a sporting mentality from childhood, conducive to openness and personal development.
Younouss Diallo, director of school 3 of Ourossogui and representing the Inspector of Education and Training (IEF) of Matam, welcomed these initiatives. He highlighted their beneficial impact on the health of children, since these are practices that they could not do regularly due to lack of resources in schools. “These are activities that children do not practice every day in schools due to lack of material resources,” he said.
Founded in 2017 by Ibrahima Hamidou Thiam, basketball player and president of the Matam Regional Basketball League, the Matam Sports association is not limited to sport, it also invests in projects linked to the environment and health. As the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) mentioned, this initiative is part of a global project aimed at strengthening the sporting and educational skills of young people in the region.
