The race for mayor of () is on. In all likelihood, François Garay should not run again in 2026 after a reign of twenty-five years and four mandates.

A revolution in this city of 34 000 habitants which whets the appetite. Several deputy mayors are already thinking about launching into the battle.

“I feel as legitimate as anyone else”

Damien Vignier is the first to draw. On January 2, 2025, the deputy in charge of Sports and Health published a video on social networks announcing his candidacy.

“It got close to 13,000 views,” he relishes. People recognize my work. I feel as legitimate as anyone else. »

The son of Michel Vignierformer departmental councilor, believes that he is continuing his associative and professional commitment to the town for almost thirty years.

“I've been thinking about running for municipal elections for a year now and I've been working discreetly. Let's say that now this work will be more visible. I have a campaign plan already established until March 2026.”

Papa Waly Danfakha will quickly position himself

Over the past few months, other names came to the table like those of Papa Waly Danfakha, Davy Ramos and Souad Ammouri Mostafi.

Papa Wali Danfakha only told us that he would inform the residents of his choice on Saturday January 25, 2025, on the occasion of the galette des rois of the Republic collective, which he himself founded.

For two years, theDeputy in charge of Involvement Democracy and Relations between public services and users is increasing the number of public meetings on various themes: ecological transformation, health, education, training, etc.

In 2021, he had the opportunity to “test himself” by being candidate for departmental elections in the canton of Mureaux. At 1is In turn, he had held out (on the town of Mureaux, Editor's note) to Boris Venon, considered at the time as the possible successor to François Garay before his resignation in September 2022.

Davy Ramos doesn't close the door

In charge of Economic Development, Business, Innovation and the Heart of the City, David Ramos also has a few tricks up its sleeve. Younger than the other contenders (35 years old), he admits to being “an option”.

“A reflection is being carried out. The idea is that someone from the Ensemble pour Les Mureaux association (launched thirty years ago by François Garay under another name, Editor's note) is a candidate. But it is not in January 2025 that we will declare ourselves. »

“To be a candidate,” he continues, “you must have a vision, a team. Once the team is formed, we can announce that we are going. We must work on the collective state of mind rather than the individual. »

“I hope we don’t pull each other in the way”

Contacted, the first assistant Souad Ammouri Mostafi did not respond to our requests. However, it remains unlikely that the four names mentioned above are all candidates.

“Time will mean that we will be obliged to discuss togetheranalyzes Davy Ramos. I hope we don't pull each other in the way. » “My door is wide open, as long as it is not about the extremes,” adds Damien Vignier.

Maintaining unity within the municipal council

In the middle of it all, François Garay will have the mission of maintaining unity within the municipal council over the next fourteen months. Contacted by 78 actu, he refused to comment on the situation.

“It’s simple, I dedicate myself to the town of Mureaux. There are enough topics on the table. »

François Garay leaves suspense hanging

It remains to be seen who he will grant his support when the campaign is actually launched. Unless there is a turnaround and a candidacy for a fifth term at 76 years old. It also leaves suspense lingering. “Am I going to go back?” I can't tell you. »

“It is in his interest to contain the desires of everyone,” estimates communist activist Thibaud de Fleury-Fagnère, who has not ruled out running.

Opposition municipal councilor Hervé Riou (ex-LR) also remains prudent on the announced retirement of François Garay.

“I know human nature. I will be sure and certain that he stops the day it is too late for him to submit his candidacy. »

An opportunity for the right or the extremes?

Lurking in the shadows, Hervé Riou observes with some amusement the ambitions of everyone. “The different groups are starting to form. Some express disagreements whereas before, everyone stayed in their row. »

Could this serve its interests in 2026? “For the moment, I am not a candidate, but we are thinking about how tilt the political offer in the town to the right. It remains a two-round election. If there was only one, I would have been more enthusiastic. »

During the first half of 2025, it is likely that other political forces (RN, LFI?) are emerging and bringing their share of uncertainties in an election which already promises to be more contested than the previous ones.
