The call launched by Serigne Mbaye Thiam for the reconstruction of the Socialist Party (PS) provoked strong reactions within the historic party of Senegal. According to Les Echosthe former minister recently called a meeting to “talk about the prospects” of this refoundation. But, while some officials support the approach to renew the PS by giving space to young people, others see it as a charade that is difficult to accept.
The debates on the various platforms, in particular the socialists’ WhatsApp groups, are multiplying. Although all members recognize the lethargy that has reigned in the party for several years, opinions differ as to how to proceed. Stanislas Ndiaye, socialist leader in Rufisque, is one of the most vehement opponents. He denounces Serigne Mbaye Thiam’s initiative as being an insincere maneuver. According to Les EchosStanislas Ndiaye criticizes the “false calls” and pleads for young people and women of the PS to have a real place in the governing bodies. “It is time to put in their place those who have harmed youth and their ideals,” he said.
At the same time, Ousseynou Keita, secretary general of UC Thiès, invites us to overcome internal tensions and focus on constructive solutions. In an interview reported by Les EchosKeita calls for avoiding stigmatization and baseless accusations. He underlines that the current situation arises in part from the choices made since the first alternation and calls for collective reflection to emerge from the crisis.
