In our country, it is Proximus which currently has the best cards for fixed internet connections in terms of performance. This is what is clear from a survey conducted by nPerf and Ookla, two organizations that specialize in measuring network quality and speed. Price differences have not been taken into account.
During the various tests carried out by the French company nPerf throughout 2024, Proximus obtained 130,251 nPoints. Orange follows closely with 126,400 nPoints, while Telenet comes third with 123,057 nPoints and VOO fourth with 120,094 nPoints. The nPerf barometer is based on 404,764 tests carried out by users via the nPerf website or with the mobile application.
Upload versus download
According to nPerf, Proximus owes its first place to an impressive upload speed of 100 Mbps, an improvement of 60 percent compared to last year (read 2023, editor’s note). Even though the download speed of 171 Mbps lags behind the competition, Proximus remains dominant in terms of overall connection quality.
Orange saw a 54 percent improvement in download speed, to 238 Mbps. ‘Its latency also remains low, at 18 ms, which allows it to remain competitive on the market,’ specify the researchers. For its part, Telenet achieved a download speed of 203 Mbps and an upload speed of 28 Mbps with a higher latency of almost 22 ms. As for VOO, it stands out with the highest download speed of 249.47 Mbps, which represents an improvement of 19 percent. With its total score of 120,094 nPoints, VOO finished in fourth place. nPerf also looked at performance when it comes to browsing and video streaming via YouTube, but here the differences seem quite small (see table).
Ookla confirms
Broadband speed tester Ookla has awarded Proximus the Speedtest Award for ‘fastest internet in the country’, for the operator’s fiber optic network. This recognition is based on more than four million fixed network connection tests, initiated by users from different providers and carried out via various applications.
With a maximum download speed of 828.66 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 506.95 Mbps, the measurement results (on Proximus fiber) were higher than those carried out on competing networks. In May 2024, Ookla also qualified the Proximus fiber network as the fastest Internet in Belgium.
