Introduction of English to preschool and elementary school: Senegal begins classes – Lequotidien

It’s 8:30 a.m. at the Gueule Tapée nursery school: English sounds tear through the silence of the school yard. They come from the Petite section class. In this room, the teacher conducts a Language and Communication lesson using English as the teaching medium. The first English words out of toddlers’ mouths. They mark the effectiveness of the introduction of English in preschool and elementary school.

According to the teacher responsible for teaching the English lessons, the objective of the lesson was to enable students to be able to correctly greet their classmates, the teacher or another person.

Today’s lesson was a great success, in the opinion of the teacher, who is also the director of the school. “I am very satisfied with the performance, the students showed enthusiasm for the discipline,” rejoices Ms. Absa Ndiaye Sall. The teacher says she has clearly measured the challenges of making the reform a reality. However, it invites the educational authorities to provide support with teaching materials, but also and above all to substantial compensation.

The academic authorities, who attended the start of English courses, welcomed the initiative and promised to support it. Fatouma Diallo Dramé, education and training inspector for Dakar-Plateau, greatly appreciated the delivery of the lesson. She indicated that all teachers selected to teach English lessons will be provided with the teaching materials necessary for the accomplishment of the reform.

The introduction of English is part of the new vision of systemic transformation of education. This is the whole meaning of the call launched by the Minister of National Education, Moustapha Mamba Guirassy, ​​for the mobilization of the entire community, but especially that of teachers, for the success of the reform.
