Goodbye 2024, Hello 2025! This week, Children's News tells you about a not-so-obsolete tradition… greeting cards. And after learning a little more about the history of this custom, why not design your own card. Come on, let's go!

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Happy New Year!

At exactly midnight, cries and hugs flooded the whole of as 2024 became 2025. Since then, not a day has gone by without hearing ''Happy New Year, Good Health''! We also send our wishes for success, happiness and love. A custom that arrived with the first stamp…

A little history

It is said that the greeting card was created in the 19the century in the United Kingdom following the appearance of the first postage stamp and the invention of lithography, a process of printing a design made on a stone.

In France, the greeting card has come to replace another tradition, that of visiting relatives, colleagues and other people at the beginning of the year, sometimes leaving a business card as proof of one's arrival.

And today?

Initially sober and serious, the greeting card has become over the years more colorful, more original, displaying festive decorations, especially since the 60s. But with the appearance of the internet and telephones, it is today Today it is more common to send an email or a text message. It can be a simple message or an e-card, sometimes personalized with your own photos. What if you too said 'goodbye' to the past year and 'hello' to the new one? What if you made your own greeting card?

It's happening at home

Greeting card tutorial

It's up to you to make your own greeting card. We offer you a very simple and quick model to make.

The material

– a kraft or white sheet (folded in half)

– glittery, colored, patterned paper, newspaper, etc.

– glitter

– scissors (and a cutter)

– liquid glue

– a pen

Step 1

Cut out stars from different papers. I took a cookie cutter as a template.

Step 2

Fold in half, what will become your card, and cut out a star on the first page.

Step 3

Decorate this first page with stars cut out from different papers.

Step 4

Glue a star on the left page, I chose a glittery gold one. Make it match that of your first page. Add a small stick to create a magic wand.

Decorate this page.

Step 6

On the right page, write a message using liquid glue. Here, “Happy New Year”. Without waiting for it to dry, pour glitter.

Write a nice message. Like “For 2025… Make a wish or several!”.
