A punchy action that escalates. Monday January 13, 2025, Kamel Brahmithe general secretary of the CGT union in Seine-Saint-Denis, was arrested during a demonstration in Livry-Gargan, tells us the public prosecutor's office, confirming information from Parisian. His police custody ended yesterday evening, but an investigation is still underway for violence against people responsible for public service.

A mobilization to save the Vauban clinic

The union action was carried out around 4 p.m. in front of the town's Town Hall. At that time, a meeting was underway within the town hall on a heated subject: the future of the Vauban clinic. The latter, in judicial liquidation, had been closed in the summer of 2023. The decision aroused the anger of residents, in a context of medical desertification in Seine-Saint-Denis.

During the meeting, a mobilization was organized by the CGT in front of the town hall. The demonstrators then tried to enter the building, and scuffles took place with the municipal police forces. In conditions that remain to be clarified, Kamel Brahmi was taken into custody during the action. The measure ended around 11 p.m., the prosecution tells us.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticizes an “abuse of power”

The question did not fail to provoke a reaction within the political class. The leader of Insoumise Jean-Luc Mélenchon thus denounced an “abuse of anti-union power”, and a “criminalization of union action”. “This penalization of social movements is unacceptable. It must stop,” also reacted the MP for Seine-Saint-Denis Clémentine Autain.

The union representative had already had trouble with the authorities. In April 2024, Kamel Brahmi was taken into custody during another violent action. It was a mobilization which took place during the inauguration of the Saint-Denis aquatic center by Emmanuel Macron.
