Faced with the drop in temperatures felt to -10°C this Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Loire-Atlantique was placed on extreme cold yellow alert by Météo-France. In addition, 27 other departments are also placed on extreme cold alert until Wednesday January 15 at midnight.

Since Saturday January 11, several emergency measures have been activated to deal with the cold episode. In , a former public building welcomes the homeless, while a gymnasium in Saint-Nazaire is also mobilized. These places will remain open until Wednesday January 15 in the morning.

The Loire-Atlantique prefecture also recalls that “SIAO-115 and SAMU Social remain vigilant to accommodate families with children on the street”. Thus, teams from these two organizations travel the streets to identify homeless people and offer them shelter in one of these two places.

Switching to yellow alert requires specific requests from the prefecture, particularly from mayors who are called upon to activate the register of vulnerable people, to report abnormal situations and to raise public awareness of the risks linked to extreme cold.

Cold episodes require particular vigilance, especially for sensitive or exposed people. The cold can in fact endanger vulnerable or isolated people, particularly the elderly, disabled or suffering.
