: the long-awaited pedestrian bridge over the Tarn will soon open

The pedestrian bridge, which connects the right bank of the Tarn to the historic center, is finally about to open, six years after the planned date. Tested by residents, this 180-meter structure aims to improve mobility in the area.

After years of waiting, the Albi pedestrian bridge which spans the Tarn is about to be put into service. Recently tested by around a hundred residents, this new equipment 180 meters long corbel is installed on the railway viaduct linking the right bank of the Tarn to the historic center of the city.

The project, initially planned for 2019, experienced delays due to business failures, the health crisis linked to Covid-19 and a dispute between two partners. Finally, the Italian company MAEG, already in charge of manufacturing the sections, was awarded the site in September 2023. The Albigeois urban community hopes open the gateway in June 2025.

“The project to create a pedestrian and cycle bridge (…) responds to the challenges of mobility at the scale of the agglomeration and of management and promotion of the Episcopal City, classified as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2010. It contributes to reducing vehicle flows in the heart of Albi while ensuring better functioning of the city and inter-district links on both sides of the Tarn,” explains the urban community on its site.

The footbridge will connect the Pratgraussals car park and the episcopal city in ten minutes on foot or five minutes by bike. It constitutes a key element of the cycling master plan, aiming to improve the continuity, connectivity and safety of the cycling and pedestrian network of the urban area, while encouraging sustainable modes of travel.
