Forced to make savings due to “transfer of charges not compensated by the State”, the Department of Hérault refuses to assume powers which are not its own.
Kléber Mesquida returned to the question of financing accommodation for women victims of violence this Tuesday, January 14 during the greetings to the press. The president of the Department, faced with budgetary difficulties, declared last November in Free Midday : “For the accommodation of women victims of domestic violence which is a responsibility of the State, it is an expense of €1.20 million, we will also stop. Let the State rent the hotel rooms.”
Kléber Mesquida keeps the pressure on
The head of the Department has softened his position, but not completely. “The accommodation of female victims with children under three years of age falls under the jurisdiction of the Department. On the other hand, when the children are over three, it is the State.” He also warns: “We put them up for two weeks in the hotel at our expense. This is very important to us. But then we will ask the hoteliers to send the invoice to the State.”
-Kléber Mesquida, on the other hand, clarified that the social workers who welcome female victims in police stations and gendarmes would not be eliminated. Kléber Mesquida maintains pressure on an extremely sensitive subject to force the State to assume its share of responsibility.
