A few days before the WEF, the state of the army’s combat aircraft fleet questions – rts.ch

Less than a week before the start of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, the state of the army’s combat aircraft is raising questions. However, they are the ones who must ensure the security of the airspace during the event.

THE CH Media newspapers revealed Monday that military aircraft flew less than they should during 2024.

In addition, the army must deal with a reduced fleet. A significant part of its 30 FA-18s are grounded due to repairs. This work is carried out in order to extend the lifespan of these devices.

The army does not indicate the exact number of devices in working order. “At least 12” jets are available. She claims that this is enough to ensure air policing, particularly within the framework of the WEF in Davos. Armed fighter jets will patrol constantly during the event.

“We are paying the price for delays”

The number of combat aircraft under repair reminds us of the need to quickly acquire new aircraft, maintains Mauro Poggia, MCG States Advisor.

“We are equipped in a largely suboptimal manner,” laments the Geneva elected official in La Matinale. “This is also the reason why Parliament consciously granted additional funds for the coming years. Now, obviously, weapons cannot be bought in a supermarket. There are waiting times and we let us pay the price for delays in this area,” he underlines.

Switzerland is awaiting delivery of its new planes, the F-35. They should come into the possession of the army from 2027.
