Teachers at an elementary school in Réfane observe a “dead day”

Teachers at the Nianiar elementary school, a district of Réfane, observed a “dead day” this Monday to protest against the attack on their Director Ibrahima Diouf by a young man from the village.

The teachers of the elementary school of Nianiar, a district of the locality of Réfane (Bambey department) observed, on Monday January 13, 2025, a dead day. They decided to release the students to protest against the violence perpetrated by a young man from the village on their Director General, Ibrahima Diouf. The latter was attacked in the very courtyard of the school by a young wrestler from the village named Moussa Ngom alias ”Gouy-Gui”, according to information collected from teachers.

The events took place on Thursday January 9, 2025. The Director of the elementary school, Ibrahima Diouf, who has noted for some time cases of vandalism on the establishment’s equipment, but also on the shrubs in the courtyard of the school, had decided, that day, to stand guard to unmask the perpetrators. So, he took shelter watching for vandals. Some time later, a group of young people appeared and began their act of vandalism against the plants and other school materials.

As soon as Director Mr. Diouf came out of his hideout, they took off, according to information from the teachers. However, the Director managed to overpower one of the young people and brought him to his office to ask him for the identity of the other accomplices. This fact created a crowd in the establishment. The young Moussa Ngom, aboard his cart, comes across the spectacle. He stops his horse and comes to demand that the Director “let the young man go” who was in his office. Faced with the refusal of the Director who wanted to clarify this matter, young Ngom became angry. The Director asks him to leave his establishment.

But as soon as Mr. Diouf and the young man found themselves in the courtyard, according to witnesses, the young man, using a wrestler’s hold, lifted the Director before pinning him to the ground. Director Diouf, aged over 50, took a while to get up. Since then, he has complained of pain in his upper chest (clavicle). Fearing the young man’s arrest, the village elders stormed the home of the Director of the Nianiar elementary school, begging him not to file a complaint.

Faced with this pressure, the Director has not yet filed a complaint. This angered all the teachers at the school who decided to make themselves heard. For them, this attack is not the first incident against teachers in Réfane who are often “harassed” by certain young people in the village, particularly those excluded from the school system for behavioral problems.

On Monday January 13, 2025, teachers at Nianiar elementary school held the day off, they say, to warn against violence in schools and acts of vandalism in their school. They informed the Bambey Education and Training Inspectorate against these wrongdoings and asked the judiciary to do its job in this matter.
