The Swiss are increasingly giving up meat – rts.ch

Swiss households are increasingly giving up meat. According to a survey by the University of St. Gallen, the share of households that consume animal products without restrictions increased from 71% in 2022 to 64% today.

Flexitarians reduce their meat and fish consumption in a targeted manner, but do not give it up completely, explains the University of St. Gallen on Monday.

To be considered flexitarian in the study, consumption should not exceed 300 grams of meat and 200 grams of fish and seafood per week. In 2022, 18% of all households surveyed reported flexitarian eating. In 2024, this rate increased to 27%, an increase of around 50%.

On the other hand, vegan or vegetarian diets have barely progressed: vegetarians recorded a slight increase, from 7.8 to 8.1%, while the share of vegan households remained very low, with a slight decline of 0.5 to 0.3%.

Cow’s milk remains popular

While eating meat and fish is increasingly declining, consumption of dairy products remains constant at a relatively low level, according to the study.

Although plant-based alternatives to milk and yogurt are increasingly available, their consumption remains low in Switzerland, writes the University of St. Gallen.

The study was based on data from the “Nutrition Atlas in Switzerland”: 308 households were surveyed for this purpose in 2024. The survey period extended over the months of May and June , the month of May 2024 having been particularly rainy in Switzerland.

As the researchers acknowledge, this delayed the grilling season, which may have influenced consumption habits and therefore the survey results.
